BACKGROUND
Following the Enclosure Award in 1868 the area of approximately 1 acre, now called The Claypits, was given to the village of Llanteg.
It was divided into two parts and used by the residents of Crunwere Parish for the removal of stones for road repair and clay for domestic heating (the clay being mixed with coal dust to make balls which kept the fire alight overnight).
Both these activities ceased many years ago and the area lay idle becoming overgrown and inaccessible.
To ensure the area's longevity and continued use as a valuable community space, in 2008 Llanteg Community Association began clearing and enhancing the area for recreational purposes, with a lawned area and pond. A lot of clearing, ground levelling and replanting was needed and took several years and a lot of dedicated volunteering effort. The Llanteg Community Association later merged with the Llanteg Hall Committee and The Llanteg Gardening Group took on the ongoing maintenance of The Claypits on behalf of Amroth Community Council.
The first public function held in the reclaimed area was a Village BBQ in Summer 2013 which continued annually for several years.
In 2019 a number of trees had to be removed, unfortunately, as part of ash dieback management.
To help with re-establishing the area, Llanteg Gardening Group made a successful application for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority's "Force for Nature Grant", a scheme to encourage community groups to "deliver positive conservation and environmental actions". The grant of £500 covered The Claypits and other open spaces around Llanteg.
A small group of volunteers formed the Llanteg Pollinator Project - to pool ideas and a wealth of knowledge to help decide how they would spend the grant. For The Claypits, it was decided that, as much of the grass is kept long and natural, it would be better to plant fruit trees/bushes and shrubs that will cope with longer grass once they get established.
Today, The Claypits is managed as a simple and natural open space for the community to enjoy. There is a small grassed area immediately upon entering, some picnic benches for people to sit and enjoy the natural space and the pond located behind the grassed area to encourage wildlife. There are no formal planting or pathways.
